MANDALAY

Située sur le haut Irrawaddy, Mandalay était en 1993, avec 600 000 habitants environ, la deuxième ville de Birmanie. Créée en 1857 pour remplacer Ava Amarapura, elle fut la capitale royale de la haute Birmanie et reste aujourd’hui le premier centre religieux et culturel du pays. La ville-palais, dominée par les Mandalay Hills qui portent monastères et pagodes, s’est doublée, à l’ouest, de quartiers commerçants au plan en damier, caractéristiques de l’ère coloniale. Les villes d’Ava, d’Amarapura et de Sagaing appartiennent maintenant à la conurbation de Mandalay. L’artisanat traditionnel demeure (travail de l’or et de l’argent, du jade, du bronze). Mandalay a été pourvue de quelques activités industrielles traitant les ressources agricoles de sa région: conditionnement du thé, industrie cotonnière, centre de distribution du riz de la plaine de Kyaukse. Mandalay possède une université et des instituts techniques.
